What is the most common word that you have heard whenever cancer comes into picture? Its chemotherapy! Everyone assumes that if the person has cancer, he has to go for chemotherapy. No it’s not like that. Chemotherapy treatment will be given to the person only if he needs it. It depends on the type of cancer, span of cancer and stage of cancer. All these three play a very important role in deciding the chemotherapy sessions. If the person has end stage cancer and there are no chances of survival at all, then chemotherapy is avoided. The cancer is left untouched.

But the cancer is in early stages and survival chances are higher only than chemotherapy is advised. What exactly is chemotherapy? It is basically a treatment which includes chemical drugs. It can either be in the form of a capsule or a tablet or it can be given using a catheter. Chemotherapy does have side effects and people start feeling these side effects within days of their chemotherapy session. Most common side effect which is seen is hair loss. With every chemotherapy session, hair loss increases and then time comes when the person has lost all his hair.

It is not an easy thing to handle, loss of self-confidence is the worst thing that happens. Time, attention, love and care is what it takes to add days to a cancer patient’s life. Handling this disease is not easy, help them do it! Research says that cancer patients who are happy and in a positive environment recover faster than ones who stay alone in a depressing surrounding! Happiness is the key to faster recovery! By- Dt. Trishala Chopra

Study finds relation between baldness & prostate cancer:

medicoSA: Medical Collaborated Ecosystem
In a new study it is found that the Men with a specific pattern of baldness at the age of 45 have a 40% increased risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer as compared to the men with no baldness in their 40s.

“Our study found an increased risk for aggressive prostate cancer only in men with a very specific pattern of hair loss -baldness at the front and moderate hair-thinning on the crown of the head -at age 45,” said senior study author Michael B. Cook, an investigator at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. “But we saw no increased risk for any form of prostate cancer in men with other hair loss patterns,” Cook added.

39,070 men from US PLCO Cancer Screening Trial were the part of the study in which researchers analysed male-pattern baldness in relation to prostate cancer. On follow-up, around 1,138 prostate cancer cases were diagnosed, 51% are aggressive.

Cook also said “While our data shows a strong possibility for a link between the development of baldness and aggressive prostate cancer, it’s too soon to apply these findings to patient care.”

How to diagnose cancer?

Timely detection of cancer helps in the treatment and survival of the patient. Medical Tools like X-rays, CT-scans, MRI Scans, PET Scans and Ultrasound Scans are used regularly in the detection of tumors that where the tumor is located or which part of the body is affected by tumor.
Endoscopy is also used by the doctors who help in detecting the abnormalities in the body of a patient.
For the diagnosis of cancer, cancer cells have been extracted from the body & by the microscope know about the cancer. This is called biopsy. Also the physicians analyze the sugar, fats, proteins and DNA of the body at a molecular level.
All these techniques are used to detect the cancer in human body.

Detection of stages of cancer:

After diagnosis, doctors determine the stages of the cancer or detect that how far cancer has spread.
The common method of staging i.e. cancer staging method called TNM system, in which:
T (1-4) indicates size of primary tumor.
N (0-3) indicates the degree to which cancer spread.
M (0-1) indicates whether cancer has metastasized to other organs.
From 0 to 4, lower number indicate, les spread of cancer in which stage 1 is curable while stage 4 is untreatable.

Treatment of cancer:

Treatment depends on the stage of cancer, type of cancer, age, status of your health.
Treatment of cancer includes the following ways:–
• Surgery
• Radiation
• Chemotherapy
• Immunotherapy
• Hormone therapy
• Gene therapy

Surgery: surgery is one of the old techniques for cancer. In this, tumor is removed and surgeon also takes a small portion of healthy tissue as a margin so that no malignant cells are left behind.

Radiation: in this technique cancer cells are destroy by the help of radiations or high- energy rays. This technique is known as radiotherapy. Radiotherapy can shrink a tumor & destroy the cancer cells. It is used with the combination of other treatments.

Chemotherapy: In chemotherapy, chemicals are used which interfere cell division process by damaging protein or DNA of the cancer cells or those cells which are dividing rapidly. This technique is also used with other techniques.

Immunotherapy: This therapy induces the fighting ability in the immune system of the body which helps in preventing the cells from cancer.

Hormone therapy: The productions of hormones which are connected with cancer get alter in this technique which results in the damage of cancer cells.

Gene therapy: damaged genes can be replaced in this therapy.

Cannabis reduce the growth of tumor

medicoSA : Centralised Medical Record Keeping System

cannabis

Researchers of university of East Anglia have found that cannabis reduce the growth of tumor in cancer patient and they hope that this research help in the development of synthetic equivalent with anti-cancer properties.

Researcher team induce tumor through the sample of human cancer cell in mice. After that they target the cancer/tumor with the dose of cannabis compound i.e. THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) & they found that two cells receptors were responsible for drug’s anti tumor effects.

Peter McCormick from UEA said, “THC has anti-cancer properties, this compound is known to act through a specific family of cell receptors called cannabinoid receptors but it is still not clear that which of these receptors have this anti-tumor effect.

He said “the finding also helps in explaining the effects of THC at low & high doses on tumor growth. This must be interesting to know the molecular mechanisms behind how marijuana & THC influence cancer pathology “. And they hope that this research help in the development of therapeutics, which is available in future for the reduction of tumor growth.

CANCER

medicoSA: Networked Healthcare System

Cancer is a group of diseases which is cause due to abnormal growth of the cells. There are around 100 types of cancers are present and each of them is classified according to the cell from which cancer is derived.
Cancer can cause harm to the body when the cells divide uncontrollably and form lumps or masses of tissues called tumors. Not all tumors are cancerous; benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body because they are present on one spot and are limited in their growth.
When the tumor is spread to different part of the body, grow and destroy other cells of the body this process is called metastasis which results in a serious condition which is difficult to treat.

CLASSIFICATION OF CANCER:

Cancers are classified by the type of cell. These types include:
• Carcinoma: These are derived from epithelial cells and develop in the breast, prostate, lung, pancreas, and colon.
• Sarcoma: Arising from connective tissue (i.e. bone, cartilage, fat, nerve), originating in mesenchymal cells outside the bone marrow.
• Lymphoma and leukemia: These two classes of cancer arise from hematopoietic (blood-forming) cells that leave the marrow and tend to mature in the lymph nodes and blood, respectively. Leukemia is the most common type of cancer in children accounting for about 30%
• Germ cell tumor: Derived from pluripotent cells, most often presenting in the testicle or the ovary (seminoma and dysgerminoma, respectively).
• Blastoma: Derived from immature “precursor” cells or embryonic tissue. Blastomas are more common in children than in older adults.

SYMPTOMS OF CANCER:

1. Fever: Fever which comes and goes or which is persistent can cause stress to the immune system which makes immune system low and reduce its capacity to fight with infections. Almost all the patients of cancer will have fever at some time and fever is an early sign of cancer like leukemia & lymphoma.
Fatigue: Fatigue is extreme tiredness that does not get better with rest and it is the most common symptom of cancer. This symptom show in both malignant and non-malignant conditions which can be evaluated by the physicians

2. Pain: pain is not an early symptom of cancer but occur when cancer is spread from one part of the body to another part. Pain generally occurs at the time of some cancers which are related to the bones.

3. Unintentional Weight loss: Loss of weight without any reason is one of the symptoms of cancer. If you lose 10 pound or more definitely warrants a visit to the doctor. This type of weight loss can occur with or without loss of appetite.

4. Changes in the skin: effect of cancer on skin shows with the following signs & symptoms
• Darker looking skin (hyperpigmentation)
• Yellowish skin and eyes (jaundice)
• Reddened skin (erythema)
• Itching (pruritis)
• Excessive hair growth
5. Chronic cough: Cough that won’t go away and become worse with the time can be dangerous and with blood and mucus, it becomes a major symptom of lung cancer.

CAUSES OF CANCER

There are two factors which play an important role in causing the cancer i.e. environmental factors and genetical factors. Environmental factors are those which are not inherited from the ancestors, some 90–95% of cases, can be attributed to “environmental” factors. The remaining 5–10% is due to inherited genetics or genetical factors which are inherited from the ancestors.
Inherited factors are like lifestyle, economic and behavioral factors. Whereas environmental factors are tobacco (25–30%), diet and obesity (30–35%), infections (15–20%), radiation, stress, lack of physical activity and environmental pollutants.
Cancer is the result of uncontrollable cell growth. Cell which is normal have a proper path of growth, division, and death. Those cells which do not follow this path and divide abnormally cause cancer.

Some of the misconceptions of cancer:

medicoSA:Online Healthcare System

1) Cancer is easily detectable, by today’s medical technology.
Cancer is one of the main chronicle diseases and also complicated in nature. It is not easy to detect & there is no specific way to spot it correctly.

2) Positive attitude beat the cancer
This is not true that positive attitude increase your chances of being cured. Positive attitude only helps in facing the situation, during the cancer treatment. You became much more active & make you better to deal with your cancer.

3) Cancer spread through surgery
Cancer do not spread through surgery even surgery is the first & most important treatment of cancer. After surgery some people feel worst and at the time of surgery if your surgeon discovers that your cancer is more advanced, then the thought will come that due to surgery more advanced & extensive cancer is occur. But there is no evidence to support this myth.

4) Same kind of cancer treated with the same kind of treatment.
Treatment of your cancer depends upon the type of cancer, location of the cancer and spreading of the cancer. It is totally based upon your genes. Genes are the fundamental unit of the life which shows the effect of chemotherapy & other treatment on cancer which is different from others.

5) Cancer causes pain
Some of the cancer does not cause any pain. For those who experienced the pain, especially who are suffering from advanced pain, doctors now much aware how to manage or control such type of pains.
Although all pains are not eliminated but it may be control so that it will not affect your daily routine.
